I always tried to dodge that starry-eyed naivete
That tends to make me sigh and feel that strange love that isn't real
It only took a wistful look
From a girl for me to turn her into a book
Of epic love and sacrifice
When really she's just shy or nice

And it makes me feel dumb
Pretending each girl could be the one
So I think that I'm finally done
Pretending my true love has come (she's not the one)

When I found I tended to invent
Relationships on false pretense
I taught myself to keep things straight
'Cause "I love you" has too much weight
And things got better, life was light
I was feeling like I got it right
Just doing whatever I wanted to

I guess love is something that I could believe
So if it's our lot to be this knot
For which we fought and lied and shot
